Cohuna Golf Bowls Notes
The milder weather brought the Tuesday bowlers out in force this week, with triples the order of the day. Trophy recipients were Linda, Rhonda and Elaine who combined well to have the highest winning margin on the day.
The final of the club fours followed, with spectators enjoying a very close game, the Keely rink just defeating Col Barton’s team 15-14.
On Thursday we staged the first round of the Pie and Soup series, in combination with our Russ McLoughlan Memorial Day. Russell has been remembered annually for his participation in the club, and with terrific support from his family it has grown into a massive day for all involved.
A full field of 28 teams took part, with only three able to string together the required three victories. Winners were the Cohuna trio of Mike Hofman, Jeff Reade and Peter Vander Zande, ahead of Col Anderson, Rodney Bannister and Gail Anderson. Third place went to the Echuca side headed by John Exton.
Friday we celebrated inside, with our Presentation Night really well attended. Major awards won over the season were handed out by the trio of President John Keely, Secretary Yvonne Eckhardt and MC for the night Ian Coates, in between the courses of Ben North’s wonderful catering.

Two special awards were made following the trophy presentations in the form of Life Memberships to Irene Trezise and Michael Carmody. A resume of the contributions that both have made to the club over many years was warmly applauded by all present. Fellow life members Peter Bibby and Yvonne Eckhardt pinned the appropriate badges on two very worthy recipients of the club’s highest honour.
The week was wound up on Sunday with the Waverly Shield and Cohuna Cup being played at our club, the event solely for Golf Clubs with a Bowling section attached. Twelve clubs from all over participated, with the locals copping most of the glory at Presentation time. Winners were President John Keely, Ron Eckhardt, Yvonne Eckhardt and Len Mathers from a Kerang Golf side headed by their President Jim McLeish.
The Waverly Golf & Bowls Club trophy will have pride of place in our clubrooms for the next twelve months.
Thanks to all who contributed to the staging of the day, from taking entries, preparing the greens and catering so well for all who took part, both in bowls and golf.
