Cohuna Golf Bowls Notes
Triples was the chosen game for Tuesday social bowls, with a couple of big wins standing out. Best on the day were Yvonne Eckhardt, Irene Trezise and Corrie Murchie who is bowling very consistently. One more week at 1 pm before we revert to a 9.30 commencement on Cup Day.
Midweek pennant saw us travel across to Barham, our opponents their second Divvy One side. Scores see-sawed across all three rinks during the day, with all players happy to enjoy the under-cover bowls. Eventually all teams came out on top, albeit narrowly, giving us a fourteen shot victory overall. The voucher winning side was that of Leica Roney, Frank Trezise, Linda McManus and Len Mathers.
Wednesday night’s first hitout was a victim of the wild weather that came through, we hope for a better outcome this week. Names in by 6.45 for a 7 pm start.
The Thursday pairs was able to go ahead fortunately, once all the leaves and twigs had been cleaned up. Twenty-four players was great, as tournaments elsewhere had snared quite a few of our regulars. The major MVP Feeds award went to Ian Morrison and Janet Doyle, with Mal Hogan and Ursula Kerry runners-up. The best second game was that of Kate Peace and Elaine Bartram, whilst Kimmy’s encouragement vouchers went the way of John Cunningham and Irene Trezise.
With the Gunny Golfers having a bye, only three sides took to the track on Saturday, with results evenly balanced, one win, one loss and a draw.
The Northern Valley side hosted Barham, and managed an overall victory due mainly to the dominant rink of Harrison Keely. After leading 16-5 after eleven ends, the Fletcher rink was steamrolled over the final ten ends to lose 19-24. Jarred Hammond had the close one, getting home by a single shot despite winning only nine ends.
Division One met Kerang Golf on a green that certainly suited the home side who had it all worked out. Frank Tonn managed a seven shot win nevertheless, with Bruce Morrison two shots up on Graham Hayes. After battling all day the rink of Frank Trezise lowered its colours by nine, resulting in a drawn game overall.
The intrepid Twos headed North to Wakool, and didn’t quite get the result hoped for. Lee Sutherland came in with handy ten shot win, but it was all down hill for Mal Appleby and Linda McManus, defeated by nineteen and twelve respectively. Another trip away to Pyramid this week, let’s hope for an improved showing. The Bower vouchers to Lee, John Prout, Bill Waters and Mary Rodwell.
On the home front all draws have been posted for the men’s championship events. Although dates have been set, matches can be organised from now on. We all know the last minute rush that occurs at season’s end.
The champion singles final between our Jarred Hammond and Barham’s Mark Quor was moved from our greens to Barham on Sunday, a wise decision considering the weather. Jarred quickly showed that the move wasn’t a problem, by taking control after ten or so ends, to run out a comfortable winner 25-12. On that performance he will continue to do our club proud at regional level.
