Cohuna Golf Bowls Notes
Our last epistle before the Christmas break, and with it goes best wishes to all members and friends for a safe and happy festive season. May everyone return in the New Year refreshed and ready (hopefully) for an onslaught on the finals.
Social Tuesday finished up with a mixture of pairs and triples, followed by a very enjoyable basket lunch. Major winners were Noelene Brown and Kath Westblade, whilst others scored in the novelty divisions.
Wednesday saw the final midweek pennant game played at Cohuna, with the result favouring the home side. Frank Tonn gained two points for us with a two shot victory, but with Bruce down by two and Craig by fourteen overall honours went Cohuna’s way. Some good came out of the day with Cohuna supplying a magnificent luncheon for all their pennant guests, an act greatly appreciated by all.
Wednesday night combined bowls and Christmas frolics, with the trio of Helen Hall, Mal Appleby and Rob Bower collecting the chocolates at the end of the night, from a very jovial Santa. Supper was supplied by Max and Lee, and put together in fine style by Kirsty. All the hard-working organisers can have a spell until the competition cranks up again on January 14th.
Thursday pairs attracted a near record field of 40 plus bowlers, who enjoyed quick greens and pleasant company. Best performed was the pairing of Yvonne Eckhardt and Ursula Kirby, with Pat Quinn and Lurch runners-up. The repechage cash went the way of Peter Coates and Alan Cooke. The social committee supplied snags, fruit platters and slices (thanks Jeanette) to build on the holiday atmosphere. This event resumes on the 15th.
On to Saturday pennant, with the Northern Valley match against Barham seeing us sneak in by the narrowest of margins. Harrison and Jarred collecting just enough shots to cover Bluey’s loss, home by three overall. This group is level on points with Murray Downs at the head of the ladder, hopefully to sneak past them in the new year.
The Ones hosted Kerang Golf, with the result not indicative of respective ladder positions. The visitors held Frank Tonn to a draw, were within one of Lee Sutherland, and clinched the points with an eight shot victory over Bruce Morrison. The Bower vouchers to Lee, Ron Eckhardt, Brandon Keely and Bill Waters. A bit of a setback, but hopefully with a full squad to choose from after the break, our fortunes should improve.
The Twos are the dream team at present, with all rinks having victories against Cohuna Linda McManus led the way with seventeen up, with Ian Morrison (13) and John Prout (70 making sound contributions. Up to second on the ladder and travelling well.
Out again, this time on Friday night for our Christmas meal and break up. A terrific crowd enjoyed the Good Meat catering, a few moments of trivia and each other’s company. Toni Barton was the night’s major raffle winner.
On Sunday we staged our annual classic fours, in terrific conditions bar that incessant wind. Twenty four sides took part, with twenty different clubs participating, a credit to organisers Mick and Ian.
At day’s end four teams had won all four matches, with shots up needed to establish placings. Winners were Michael Carmody’s rink of Bluey Fletcher, Col Barton and Daryl Weymouth, a couple of shots ahead of Buck Lehmann’s Murray Downs quartet. Third was the Anderson Cohuna entry skipped by Rick Parr.
Best wins in each game went the way of C. Cauchi, R. Pascoe/C. Felmingham, F. Maher and P. Quinn. Many thanks to the sponsors, raffle donors, especially 35 Mens and Pioneer seeds, greens staff, the lady caterers and their helpers, plus members who helped out to play when needed.
Tournament winners: C.Barton, D.Weymouth, R.Fletcher, M.Carmody
