Cohuna Golf Bowls Notes
Very close games marked Tuesday’s social bowls, with no more than two shots between all games. Winners were Linda, Margot and Irene who won by that margin over Noelene’s side.
Wednesday pennant proved to be unfortunately our last game of the year, with Kerang Golf taking the honours over at Barham. Not everything was a negative, with both the rinks of Frank Tonn and Frank Trezise winning their matches. The margin between their wins, and the losing tally of the Bibby rink was still ten shots in Kerang Golf’s favour.
Our last Kimmy’s award for the year went to Frank Trezise, Bruce Morrison, Linda McManus and Len Mathers, who finished off with a great win.
Wednesday night bowlers are fast approaching the end of their home and away games, with competition heating up for a place in the top four. Winners this week were Jason Hall, George Payne and Leigh McLaren. Thanks to AG Warehouse for their continued support of this competition, much appreciated by all participants.
Thursday pairs used the better part of both greens this week, with nearly forty players in attendance. Best performed was the pairing of Elaine Bartram and Pyramid’s Marie Noelker, with John Pearson and Ian Fasham (Barham) runners-up. Best second game went to Pyramid’s Marie Scott and Ian Morrison, with Margot Henty and Mal Hogan collection the coffee vouchers.
It was rewarding to see members of sister clubs use the day for practice for forthcoming finals on our greens.
On the tournament circuit we had members collecting trophies at both Rich River (ladies) and Serpentine (men’s) events, both narrowly missing out on the major slice of prize-money. It’s off to Wakool on Sunday for another keen group.
After hours of dedication by the greens and surrounds group, our venue looked a million dollars for Saturday’s preliminary finals matches. With two Golf sides already qualifying for Grand Final day it was up to our Division One to try to join them.
With Frank Tonn’s rink off to a flying start, which included a magical eight early on, Golf established an early lead, and although scores ebbed and flowed during the day, scores showed Golf ahead by ten shots at match end. A third side is now in premiership contention, what a wonderful effort from club members. Peter Bibby’s rink won by eleven, Frank Tonn by nine with Frank Trezise ten in arrears of Frog Spittal. The Bower vouchers went to Peter, Bruce Morrison, Yvonne Eckhardt and Len Mathers.
Cohuna is the venue for all Northern District finals next Saturday, with the second and third division matches scheduled for 1 o’clock starts, leaving Division One to commence at 1.30. Hopefully this stream-lines the post match presentations, enabling all awards to be handed out in succession.
Our members are having a finals celebration, win or lose, on Saturday night at the greens, but without knowing the Northern Valley results, as they don’t play until the next day at Keran, from 1.30. We know a big contingent of our members will be over there giving support.
